This toolbox is for Facebook users who:
- Want a better understanding of what information Facebook makes public about them
- May wish to continue using Facebook, but on their own terms and with greater control over their information
- Need tools that go beyond the limitations of Facebook's privacy settings
There are several tools listed here, and some of them have overlapping capabilities. Here is the combination of tools that is working out well for me:
What I use:
- Multifox
- Facebook Privacy Scanner at ReclaimPrivacy.org
- Facebook API Browser
- Search Your Facebook Information on Google
Background Information
- New Facebook privacy changes are a LOT worse than I thought
- Are you removing Facebook fan pages from your profile to protect your privacy? Let page owners know!

Diaspora
in 3 toolboxes
add to my toolboxDiaspora is "the privacy aware, personally controlled, do-it-all distributed open source social network" (according to their website). Diaspora is positioning itself as a Facebook alternative, and the project was launched in response to the backlash against Facebook's 2010 privacy changes.
-
Facebook API Browser
in 8 toolboxes
add to my toolboxDisplays any information that is visible to anyone on the Internet through normal use of the Facebook Graph API. Facebook apps used by you or your friends might see more.
Use with caution: This tool may not reflect all information shared by Facebook, such as the information shared in their "Instant Personalization" pilot program, or some biographical information such as gender or hometown.
Note: To get the most accurate results from this tool, make sure to turn off other Facebook privacy protection tools (such as Facebook Privacy List and others) before running this tool.
-
Facebook Privacy Scanner at ReclaimPrivacy.org
in 6 toolboxes
add to my toolboxAn independent and open tool for scanning your Facebook privacy settings. The source code and its development will always remain open and transparent.
Note: To get the most accurate results from this tool, make sure to turn off other Facebook privacy protection tools (such as Facebook Privacy List and others) before running this tool.
-
Google Your Facebook Information
in 4 toolboxes
add to my toolboxFind out what publicly-searchable information Google has collected about you from www.facebook.com. The search works best if your name is not extremely common. Note: this search only shows publicly-accessible web pages on www.facebook.com. It may not show all personal information that Facebook exposes to the public and to partners through various channels.
-
Multifox
in 6 toolboxes
add to my toolboxMultifox is an extension that allows Firefox to connect to websites using different user names, simultaneously.
Use Multifox to run Facebook in its own separate identity profile browser window. Don't access any other websites in that window. This helps contain the browser cookies that Facebook uses (among other methods) to share your data with outside websites. (Multifox comes in handy for a lot of other uses, too.)
-
OpenBook
in 3 toolboxes
add to my toolboxThe OpenBook website is not so much a privacy tool as it is an object lesson about being privacy-conscious on Facebook. The site lets you search through public status updates, many of which are rather embarrassing. (Warning: This site has potentially offensive language.)
-
Remove the Facebook Connect Plugin's "Like" iFrame
in 4 toolboxes
add to my toolboxGreasemonkey script that removes all Facebook social plugins and scripts when browsing non-Facebook websites.
-
Sandbox Facebook
in 3 toolboxes
add to my toolboxThis Greasemonkey script will prevent third party sites from accessing the facebook api, which, among other things, prevents random internet sites from accessing your profile, displaying little "like" buttons, etc.
-
